Residential Housing & Dining Fees

Residential Housing
Approximately 95 percent of undergraduate students and 60 percent of graduate students live on campus. Because the University considers the residential component of students' education so important, freshmen and new transfer students are required to live in a University dormitory during their first year at Stanford. Students must apply for housing by the published deadlines and must be willing to live anywhere on campus.
For additional information, visit Student Housing, a division of Stanford University Residential & Dining Enterprises.
Dining Services
All freshmen living in University-managed housing are required to purchase a meal plan. Students are billed for their meal plans quarterly. In addition to the residential dining halls, Stanford Dining operates eight cafes, restaurants and late-night operations across campus.
For meal plan options, student dining halls, restaurants, cafes, and frequently asked questions; visit Stanford Dining, a division of Stanford University Residential & Dining Enterprises.
Billing Information
Charges for room rent (except in private-title residences, fraternities and sororities) and Stanford Dining meal plans are included on the student's University Bill prepared by Student Financial Services. Housing charges may include early arrival fees, repair fees and termination of occupancy fees.
- If students are assigned housing after the beginning of the quarter/semester, they will be billed on the next billing cycle after the charges are incurred.
- If students are reassigned at any time during the year, their rent will be adjusted effective the date they check into the new residence. The balance of the rent change will be due within 30 days of the date the reassignment was arranged (which is not necessarily the move date).
Charges for room rent in private-title residences (Chi Theta Chi and Sigma Chi), the fraternities and the sororities, and for meal plans in all student-managed houses, the Toyon Eating Clubs, and the Suites dining societies are billed by and paid directly to the financial manager of the respective house or organization. The schedule for these payments may vary from house to house. Students in Row houses should contact their kitchen manager with any questions concerning their board bill. House dues may be charged on the University bill or directly by the individual house.
